The intersection of “Race and disability” is an often-overlooked topic.

Black caregivers often feel invisible when it comes to having their voices heard and in getting access to the services they require for their child with a disability. The added complexities of having a child with a disability often magnifies the already existing challenge of anti-Black racism.

Providing safe spaces for these families is an effective way of having their voices heard and for these families to feel engaged, enlightened and empowered to achieve positive outcomes for they and their family members.

In this workshop Black caregivers will share their challenges in accessing mainstream services for their child with disabilities, and make recommendations for improved access and engagement.

Since 2020, Sawubona Africentric Circle of Support has been supporting Black caregivers of a child with a disability, providing them opportunities to be heard. Their approach is a promising practice in supporting and engaging Black family members of a child with a disability.
